People have been asking me what settings I use for Airshows, so below is the settings I find works for me.
- 1/500th for jets when panning
- 1/1000th + for head on
- 1/320th for fast props (planes) + panning
- 1/200th for slow props (planes) + panning
- 1/60 - 1/125th (helicopters) + panning
I personally photograph airshows in full manual mode, spot metering (or meter of the grass) and adjust F-Stop (F8 - F11) and ISO until I get the above settings.
Focus set to continuos focus and set only to fire when the subject is in focus. (no point arriving home with 1000's of out of focus images)
AF Points: 21 point, and for brightly coloured subjects 51 point 3D tracking.
Focus lock set on short so the focus will stay on the subject even if a cloud or other subject gets in the way.
All images below using a Nikon D300, Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 and a Sigma 1.4tc all handheld.
